Retinol. How and when to use it? Expert Justyna Gałat.

Retinoids are substances with an exceptionally wide spectrum of activity, which is why they appear so often in new cosmetic products. What are their effects? They stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin, and also inhibit their degradation. Retinoids also prevent the appearance of discolouration, have antibacterial properties, and regulate the activity of sebaceous glands. This makes them extremely versatile active ingredients in comprehensive cosmetological therapies. In the case of retinol, gradual introduction into our skincare routine is key. With this active ingredient, less is more. Initially, retinol works mainly in the upper layer of our epidermis. It contributes to its thinning, gentle evening of skin tone, and reduction of blackhead visibility.

After prolonged use, it penetrates into deeper layers, stimulating the skin to synthesize our natural "scaffolding," i.e., collagen and elastin fibers. The skin then becomes brighter and firmer. Fine wrinkles also visibly diminish. Retinol also normalizes the activity of sebaceous glands.

As you can see, therapy with this active ingredient requires time, but it results in a significant improvement in skin condition. This applies not only to the skin of the face, but also to the skin of our hands, which we expose and use in daily activities every day.

1. Start with low concentrations and increase them gradually

It is no coincidence that the therapies available on the market involve so many steps and recommend successively increasing the concentration of retinol used. Initially, its action involves thinning the outer layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum), so that after prolonged use it penetrates much deeper and stimulates the skin to produce collagen and elastin fibers. At first, you can use it once a week. If well tolerated, it is worth increasing the frequency to twice a week.

2. Ensure regularity

This substance yields the best results with regular use. Remember, retinol is not a product for occasional use. It requires a bit more time, but the effects are worth it. It may take several months before retinol becomes a regular part of your daily skincare routine, but remember that such a system will result in much better tolerance of your skin to the action of this ingredient.

3. Remember about sun protection

Retinol is a potentially irritating substance, so it's best to incorporate it into your evening skincare routine. Don't forget to protect your skin from UV radiation during the treatment. Especially if you are boosting the effect of retinol therapy with vitamin C. Such therapy can make the skin sensitized and less resistant to sunlight. Ensure solid UV protection and be sure to reapply it throughout the day. This is very important.

Are there any contraindications to using retinol?

Retinol treatment requires not only systematicity but also caution. Remember that if introduced too aggressively into your skincare routine, this product can cause severe skin sensitization and even aggravate some problems or dermatoses (e.g., atopic dermatitis). Retinol has such a strong effect that it can be teratogenic. If you are trying to conceive or are pregnant, try to take a break from using this substance. During breastfeeding, it should no longer pose a threat. However, if the manufacturer does not recommend using a given product during pregnancy and breastfeeding, reach for an alternative ingredient - bakuchiol. What will happen in case of too aggressive treatment? The skin may be severely sensitized, dry, or even flaky. In such a case, it is necessary to ensure its intensive regeneration and hydration. This will help avoid discomfort or the exacerbation of other dermatological problems.
